I love flowers. Floral gifts are wonderful. Yet, they seem to come all at once and wilt too fast. SORAS offers an alternative bereavement gift, a personal gift to a friend or a group gift that will last.

My own memory box: I made a memory box after my mother died and randomly filled it with things that reminded me of her: a bright lipstick that shows how she stroked it on her lips, a hospital wrist band and her last menu from the hospital, her unfinished crossword puzzles, unused corset from the 1950s, a little key chain with a poodle (her favorite pet), omamori (a prayer stick for inviting safety and luck), a wrist wrap for arthritis, glasses, a key to her Acura, etc. It is this box that became the thermometer of my grief after she died. Initially, I cried every time I opened this box. Soon, the pain was mixed with laughter, and now when I open it, it is nothing but good memories of who she was. This box helped me in transforming grief into memories.

Soras Memory Box: As in the Commemorative Gifts, the box is an antique/vintage box that has been cleaned, refinished or repaired where necessary. This American art box is then lined with vintage silk kimono fabric. Each fabric is chosen to fit the mood of the box. These boxes are gorgeous! Since I custom-make these, I will offer just 12 boxes at a time.

Inside the Box: Fill the box with multicultural gifts chosen by you. These gifts have positive stories behind them. For examples, origami birds bringing peace and luck, Chinese knot/book marker bringing good luck, dream-weaver filtering in only good dreams, crystals for good vibes, etc. Have fun choosing little gifts to go inside. Your friend will remove these gifts after opening them and place his or her memory items. The gift choices are the same as the Joyful gifts. Click here to see the gift choices.

The book, From Grief to Memories (English Version) was published shortly before 9/11 took place and was read by the families via the Red Cross, firemen and other groups. It is currently being used by local hospices. This book with a sympathy card, carefully wrapped in pretty ribbon, makes a special gift. It also makes a great addition to the memory box. You are offering the bereaved simple poems, sketches, practical worksheets, a section on understanding grief and short writings from invited gifts.

The book, From Grief to Memories (Japanese Version) was translated and published in Japan. It has additional poems, thoughts, and short writings that are not in the English version. Before you order this, please know that it is written in Japanese. We are offering the Japanese books with no profit to us as the shipping charges are high from Japan to the U.S.

CDs also make a great additional gift to the memory box. If you have a specific CD in mind, we can try locating the CD for you to include it in the gift package.

A special gift that is customized with your thoughts will be remembered by your friend(s) forever! It's the next best thing to actually being there, sharing their joy or comforting them during difficult times.
